I have been blessed to photograph each of this little guy's brothers as newborns and do their One Year Cake Smash sessions as well!  He reminds me so much of his oldest brother...I had to remind myself his name was Calvin during the shoot so as not to call him by his brother's name! Maybe that's why I made the sign with his name so big:)

We started with a little doctor set to compliment his newborn session photo - done in honor of this little man's dad who if finishing his residency in mere months and starting his own practice!

This smiley guy is turning one!  My favorite milestone to capture!  When it comes to cake smashes, I really love designing the sets.  This one was extra fun because many of the items I used in the set were items I have held onto since my son was this age.  That Craftsman workbench? Yep, my sons.  That Indian motorcycle? Yep, my sons.  All those cool tools? Yep, my sons!  I did score that awesome gas tank and old oil cans though at this super cool vintage store here in Ramona.  The Vintage Vibe.  One of my new favorite places to prop shop! I am not sure how to label this cake smash, Handyman, Mechanic, Workshop, Tool... Cake smash? Not sure, so we will just call it cute and he rocked every part of it!

Luxe Cake Smash (Portrait and Cake Smash)! She is just the cutest and I LOVE how this session came together! We really kept the BOHO vibe throughout the whole session!  She was an active one though and her momma got a workout just trying to keep her on set!  Mom even sat down on set for a bit to keep her there and I think those might be some of my favorite! It had only been about 6 months since I had seen this beauty for her newborn session!  In fact, her session was my first blog post of 2019! It is crazy how much they grow and change in such a short amount of time which is one of the reasons I LOVE sitter sessions!  It is such a great milestone to capture!  She was so sweet and has the biggest sweetest eyes! I could stare at her all day!

I get asked a lot what my most common sessions types are, hands down it's newborn and one year sessions, so why not beyond that?  Well, in most cases, I see families again when they either add another family member OR they want to book a family session but that's not to say you can't do a TWO year milestone session and in this case we did!  BUT, there definitely are challenges with a two year session? 'What?' you ask? Well, the fact that they are two :). There is a reason their are expressions to capture this interesting age, the most common being the "terrible two's" but I like to call them the "typical twos" because it's not that their behavior is "terrible", it's "typical" - meaning normal, and those tantrums and assertion of their own will is HEALTHY!  They are learning independence and learning to express their opinions, they just can't use words to articulate it yet, and so we are left with a lot of "no's" and little ones running "away" from us! So PATIENCE is the key with these sessions....let the little ones guide the session and let it unfold organically, there is no forcing a two year old to sit and smile and they can't be bribed yet or reasoned with!  You get what you get and I tell clients to embrace that and keep it as a memory of this stage!

In this case, I remember a lot of chasing and corralling, but I also remember giggles and smiles...it was fun and I think a perfect capture of just where this little man was at! It wasn't my first session them either, I had seen him for his one year cake smash too and a family session before that!  When you check out those sessions, you can see how much they change and grow and hopefully see why it is so important to capture ALL these milestones!

I usually do family sessions late in the year in time for Holiday cards...but this June {2019} I did four family sessions!  Unusual but I think we should do them more....it is Father's Day after all and that is one thing I noticed about these sessions....just how great the dad's were with the kids!  I remember the intention of this session was to capture their little one's half birthday, but of course we captured the whole family and how sweet are they!?!?! I think we need more family sessions, don't you?

Meet Hudson! Wide awake Hudson! :) This little man was approaching one month when we did his "newborn" session and I am sure you can tell by his size and by how alert he is!  We can always capture great images, not matter how old, but the older they get, the less deeply (and often) they sleep and they wiggle and stretch out....so capturing those deep sleeping, curled up images of this little man were not gonna happen!  We did get some great images none the less! 

Mom shared that they loved the movie Cars and that was actually how they had come up with his name, Hudson, so I was sure to incorporate a tribute to the Hudson Hornet in one of the set ups - one of my favorites! Hope you love it too!

I was doing SOOOO good catching up with my past sessions, what happened?!  Well, I know....projects!  I, like may of you, tackled a lot of projects that were hard to find time for, deep cleaning, sorting, organizing....but we also built a chicken coop and started a flock from 2 day old chicks, landscaped the backyard to make a garden and got that going, created some "relaxing" areas in our backyard as well....it's interesting when I write it...I started quarantine focusing on the inside of the house and now we are focusing on the outside to extend our livable space....it's crazy how small your house can feel after you've been in it for a couple months non-stop (or what feels like it)! But I digress!  All that to say, sorry I haven't blogged in a over a week....but I'm back!

Meet Banks, who will be turning ONE this month!  Mom and dad were the sweetest ever and Banks was the perfect, tiny model! He even gave us some smiles towards the end!  

You will see my most common newborn progression in this session....I start with swaddled images.  I can usually do a couple of different swaddled set ups pretty quickly without disturbing baby too much....then I start to unwrap and work with less and less clothing....these images are where babies can start to become "unsettled" and we never know how sensitive they will be to posing, movement and touch until we are handling them at this point...in this case, Banks gave us a few set ups, but as I recall, that last naked set up was it....he woke up during that set, needed a diaper and to eat!  But it was a good run!  Check out all his cute images and his beautiful family!

I first met this family three years ago for the newborn session of this little man and then again a year later for his one year session ! I was ecstatic when they contacted me to let me know they were adding to their beautiful family!  We connected for a mini maternity/family session and had so much fun capturing some sweet images...any family session with a two year old involved will have some challenges, but when you go with the flow and let the energy and needs of the little one take the lead, you get awesome connection and sincere images!  Stay tuned for the newest member's newborn session blog!!!

If you saw my post yesterday, you read how I love to work with the clients to create something unique to work with their nursery theme.  This guy's nursery was best described as "things that go". It has vintage cars - big and small! Vintage maps! A vintage train that has a track that appears to go around the whole room along the ceiling line! And of course vintage planes! That is what inspired the first set of images!

Mom had requested the laptop set as well...(again, my most requested set up).  For her it made sense, she loves all things Apple and has quite an online presence with her instagram and online blog!   If you are looking to follow her adorable family, see her home, which looks straight out of a magazine, and read some "keeping it real" content, be sure to check out her instagram and her blog - you can also see amazing pics of her baby's rooms!!!!   She also do really fun giveaways from time to time!

When this mom contacted me for a newborn session, we went through the usual planning process I do.  I always ask what colors they want used in the session, the theme of the nursery, and what they plan to do with the images.  When possible (and parents are open) I like to do a unique piece for them that can work with their home.  In this case, when mom sent me pictures of the nursery I was BLOWN AWAY!  It was literally the coolest nursery I have ever seen!  It was "Alice in Wonderland" themed and the coolest collection of curated items from vintage shops that pieced together so well!  Frames, clocks, whimsical book shelf, chairs, figurines, side tables.  It was amazing and inspired me to try and create something that would match their style, the colors and the vintage vibes still while capturing some "traditional" poses.  

I had a lot of fun dreaming up these sets.  First we started with a "framed set up",  then a rich teal color that matched the decor but we "girled" it up with the heart silhouette and a butterfly reminiscent of Alice In Wonderland. We then did a couple of "vintage and neutral sets"  and popped in the laptop for that modern touch!  The next set was just for her...I made the Alice in Wonderland inspired romper and did a shelf set up on green velvet with some garden butterflies, it has become one of my favorite "unique" set ups I have done!

We ended with some traditional images/poses.  Baby Noa was just a sweet, chunky doll and such a joy to photograph!  Another fun fact about her session, her parents had managed to keep the pregnancy a secret (from most everyone) and it wasn't until she posted one of the session images with the caption "We had a baby" that people even found out!  Can you even imagine keeping a secret like that for some many months??!!! So fun!

Even though it's been a year, I remember this session well.  I remember how shy the older sister was and that it took some time to warm her up BUT once she did warm up, she wanted to explore and wasn't super interested in going "where we wanted" - alas, that it life with a 2 year old! I always try to go with the flow and let the energy and needs of the little ones in a session lead the way, I do my best to capture the interaction and love in a family and although this session "felt" crazy, what I see on my side of the camera is always different than what parents may feel during a session!  We ended up capturing some really sweet images that I love and I hope you do too!
