There is no such thing as too many sunflowers for a first birthday session. For this little girl's cake smash, we went all in on sunny yellow, warm wood tones, and an entire garden of sunflowers to celebrate turning ONE.

A Little Sunshine Turns One
Before bringing out the cake, we started with some classic first birthday portraits. Dressed in a beautiful yellow dress with a sunflower headband and tiny pearl necklace, the birthday girl fit right into her sunflower garden.
One of my favorite parts of cake smash sessions is photographing babies before the cake makes its grand entrance. It gives us a chance to capture their personality, expressions, and those little details that change so quickly at this age.
She even brought along a teddy bear for a few portraits, which made the already sweet setup even sweeter.

A Sunflower Cake Smash
Then it was time for cake.
The simple white and yellow birthday cake was surrounded by sunflowers, keeping everything coordinated with the set while still letting our birthday girl remain the star of the show.
She wasted very little time figuring out what she was supposed to do.
Soon there was frosting on her fingers, her dress, and her face, which is basically the official uniform of turning one.
Cake smash sessions aren't really about getting babies to sit perfectly beside a pristine cake. They're about capturing what happens next. The curiosity, the tiny tastes, the funny expressions, the mess, and those wonderfully unpredictable moments that make each baby's session completely different.

A Bright & Happy First Birthday Theme
Sunflowers are such a fun choice for a first birthday because they create a theme without feeling overly complicated. For this set, I combined layers of bright yellow blooms with greenery, warm wooden containers, rustic window panels, subtle twinkle lights, and simple ONE details.
The result was cheerful, warm, and full of texture while keeping the focus on the birthday girl.
