There are first birthday sessions, and then there are first birthday sessions with daisies, disco balls, a retro van, a whole lot of pink and one very enthusiastic cake eater.
This One Groovy Babe cake smash was such a fun way to celebrate a first birthday at Studio 120 Photography in Ramona, California. The session was inspired by a retro 70s theme, with soft pink and peach tones, sunny yellow accents, oversized daisies, balloons, disco balls and a vintage-inspired groovy van.
And honestly, she understood the assignment.

A Groovy First Birthday Portrait Session
Before bringing out the cake, we started with first birthday portraits so we could capture all those little details that change so quickly at this age.
Her peach outfit and daisy flower crown worked perfectly with the warm colors of the set, and we were able to photograph her both sitting and standing before things got messy. I always love including this portion of a first birthday cake smash session because it gives parents beautiful milestone portraits in addition to all of the cake-covered expressions coming later.
The set was colorful without overpowering her, with shades of blush pink, peach, mustard yellow and white creating that unmistakable retro feel.

Then Came the Cake
The cake continued the theme with soft pink frosting and tiny daisies, and it didn't take long for our birthday girl to figure out exactly what she was supposed to do with it.
Some babies delicately poke their cake.
Some babies need a little encouragement.
And some babies essentially say, yes, I see you've placed an entire cake in front of me. I can take it from here.
She dug right in.
From tiny handfuls of frosting to leaning directly into the cake, we got the wonderfully messy photographs that make first birthday cake smash photography so much fun. The best images from these sessions are often the completely unscripted ones: the suspicious first taste, the giant grin, the frosting-covered fingers and the moment they realize nobody is going to stop them.

Finishing With an Apple Bath
After the cake smash, we switched gears completely for her splash portion of the session.
Instead of continuing the retro daisy theme, we created a warm, rustic apple bath setup with wooden crates, baskets of apples, greenery, florals and rich red accents. She climbed into a vintage enamel basin surrounded by floating apples and apple slices for an entirely different collection of portraits.
It also happens to be a pretty adorable way to clean up after demolishing a birthday cake.
The contrast between the bright, playful cake smash and the earthy apple bath gave this gallery two completely different looks while still keeping the focus exactly where it belonged: on the birthday girl.

One of my favorite parts of creating cake smash sessions at Studio 120 Photography is designing each session around a theme, color palette or idea chosen specifically for the birthday child.
