One Tough Cookie Cake Smash | First Birthday Photography in Ramona, CA

Some first birthday themes are chosen because they're cute. Others carry a little more meaning.

For this sweet girl's first birthday cake smash, Mom wanted a theme that celebrated more than turning one. After a tough start following her birth, this little girl had already shown just how strong and resilient she could be.

And there really was only one theme for her:

One Tough Cookie.

For her custom cake smash session at Studio 120 Photography in Ramona, California, we created a soft pink bakery filled with tiny cakes, cookies and café details, all centered around one very special little baker.

Celebrating One Remarkable First Year

A baby's first birthday is always a milestone, but sometimes that first trip around the sun represents an especially meaningful journey.

This session was designed to celebrate her strength while still keeping everything light, sweet and joyful. The "One Tough Cookie Café & Bakery" became the perfect backdrop, giving a playful nod to everything she'd overcome while creating a beautiful setting for her first birthday portraits.

Because tough can wear ruffles, flowers and a tiny chef's hat.

And frankly, we support that.

Welcome to the One Tough Cookie Café

Before the cake came out, our newest little pastry chef got straight to work.

Dressed in white with her own chef's hat, she had a miniature mixer and pink baking utensils ready for business. The custom bakery backdrop was filled with soft blush pinks, warm neutrals, tiny café tables, baked treats and shelves of miniature dishes.

These pre-cake portraits are one of my favorite parts of a custom cake smash photography session. They give us time to capture baby's personality before the frosting starts flying and add another completely different look to the finished gallery.

Sweet First Birthday Portraits

For her next portraits, she traded her chef whites for the sweetest embroidered floral dress.

The cream, blush and soft pink tones worked beautifully with the bakery set while keeping the focus exactly where it belonged: on her.

And that personality?

Very much present.

From standing proudly with her little chair to sending kisses toward the camera, these are the photographs that capture what this milestone really looks like. Not simply what she wore or how the set was decorated, but who she was at one year old.

Time for the Cake Smash

Then the cake arrived.

A simple cream first birthday cake decorated with cookies and soft pink flowers was the perfect finishing touch for this One Tough Cookie cake smash.

She started with a little investigation before quickly discovering the important part: cake is significantly more efficient when eaten by the handful.

By the end, there was frosting on her face, cake between her fingers and crumbs scattered across the floor.

The bakery had officially lost control of the situation.

Which means the cake smash was a success.

A First Birthday With a Bigger Meaning

What I love most about this session is that you don't necessarily need to know the story behind it to appreciate the photographs. It's a beautiful, feminine bakery-themed first birthday session on its own.

But for her family, One Tough Cookie means something more.

These photographs celebrate the happy, curious, cake-covered little girl she is today while quietly honoring the strength it took to get here.

One year down.

One incredible milestone.

And definitely one tough cookie.
