The Difference Between Swaddled and Posed Newborn Sessions

Newborn photography is a beautiful way to capture the fleeting moments of your baby’s first days, but not all sessions are the same. At Studio 120 Photography, I offer two styles of in-studio newborn sessions: swaddled sessions and posed sessions. While both create timeless images, they differ in styling, setup, and flexibility.

What Is a Swaddled Newborn Session?

A swaddled newborn session focuses on keeping the baby wrapped comfortably throughout the entire session. This style is perfect for parents who love a cozy, timeless look with minimal outfit changes. Since newborns feel secure when swaddled, they tend to stay calm and sleepy, making for a smoother, more relaxed experience. There are no naked, outfit, or posed images with this session type.

Here are a variety of swaddled images.  You can see there are still lots of ways to style and theme the sets!

A swaddled newborn peacefully sleeps, wrapped snugly in a soft, neutral-toned swaddle, posed on a cozy textured blanket in the gentle natural light of Studio 120 Photography. What Is a Posed Newborn Session?

A posed newborn session involves more intricate positioning of the baby. Babies are often posed on fabrics or in props. Sometimes in outfits or loose swaddles and sometimes in their birthday suit! Various design elements are used  to create artistic and stylized portraits. These sessions require more time and patience, as the baby needs to be fully asleep to achieve specific poses safely.

Here are some examples of "Posed" Newborn images!

A posed newborn rests peacefully in a carefully arranged position, highlighting their delicate features and tiny fingers and toes. Captured in the soft, natural light of Studio 120 Photography, the baby is styled with simple, neutral props and cozy textures that create a timeless and serene aesthetic. Each pose is safely and gently guided to showcase the newborn’s natural beauty in an artistic, professional setting.A posed newborn rests peacefully in a carefully arranged position, highlighting their delicate features and tiny fingers and toes. Which Session Is Right for You?

Choosing between a swaddled and posed session depends on your preferences, your baby’s age, and how much variety you want in your gallery. If you prefer a more efficient session, more relaxed experience with minimal transitions, a swaddled session may be the perfect fit. However, if you love artistic newborn portraits with diverse setups and poses, a posed session will provide more variety.

No matter which session style you choose, both will result in beautiful, timeless images of your little one. If you’re unsure which session works best for your family, I’d love to help guide you in making the best decision!
