Each year there is an event called Mommy Con that takes place here in San Diego. I decided to attend (in November 2018) as a vendor. I met some great new mommas and a lot of expectant mommas.  I did a giveaway at my booth and this little one was the winner!  

When her momma and I started planning her session, she asked if we could do poi instead of cake since she wanted to do a Haiwaiian
theme! Mom had the outfit and provided the poi and the bowl for the poi (as I recall, her parents made the poi!) So on to set design!

I love Hawaii, I have vacationed there several times and I LOVE all the flowers and the bright colors.  I knew I wanted to do flowers so I googled how to make Hibiscus Flowers and found this awesome tutorial!  I just made them much bigger!  I had a hard time finding the right crepe paper (It needs to be thick and textured) butI found an awesome art store here in San Diego Artist Craftsman Supply! If you are into creating - you need to check them out!  They literally have everything, it's amazing! I basically followed the tutorial making them bigger (as I mentioned) and I also added some paint to some of them to create some depth and a richer color palette.  The pineapple and the "surfboard totem" I had picked up at a local design store...I did paint over some of the totem to match better, but otherwise it was perfect! And that's it - I mean, it all took a while, but man, it was fun to create! 

The poi was a fun variable as well. It was messy and fun for her to smear everywhere...not sure she loved it....there are a couple of adorable faces that should make you chuckle!  

Well to date, this poi session and a paint session are the only two "non-cake" one year sessions I've done, but I would love to do more "non-traditional" sessions...maybe with tacos or avocados, spaghetti, or WHATEVER your little one's favorite food it!  Let's collaborate and do something new and fun!
